The most common non-surgical procedure performed in the US is Botox Cosmetic. Dr. Theodore Lazzaro, as well as our Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner are highly recognized Pittsburgh Botox specialists with thorough understanding of facial anatomy, proper use of doses of Botox and the many years of experience using Botox Cosmetic to consistently deliver superior results for our Botox patients.
Wrinkles result from a combination of many factors. When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. And when you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow’s feet. FDA approved BOTOX® Cosmetic works beneath the skin’s surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes frown lines and crow’s feet to form over time.
Botox is very simple to perform for our certified injectors and usually takes only a few minutes. Using a very tiny needle, a small amount of Botox® Cosmetic is injected into the muscles that cause the wrinkles, temporarily reducing the activity of those muscles, smoothing out the skin. Since the needle used is so small, there is no discomfort and no anesthesia is needed. The final result is a reduction in the appearance of those lines. Results typically last 3-4 months.
Only your aesthetic practitioner can determine whether BOTOX Cosmetic is right for you. We are happy to see you for a BOTOX consultation at which time we will review your medical history, take photos and determine if Botox is a good option for you. Every patient is different and we specifically go over your physical exam and what realistic expectations are for you.
If we determine that BOTOX is a good choice for you the procedure involves a series of injections which take several minutes each. Botox starts to work usually within 24-48 hours and reaches peak effect closer to 14 days after treatment.
For many people, having to deal with those annoying sweat stains on their clothes, hoping no one notices them, is a daily occurrence. The embarrassment associated with excessive sweating can be profound. Whether the problem is underarm sweating or sweaty palms, the impact on day to day life can be significant. Many with excessive palmar sweating avoid shaking hands at all costs while others with excessive underarm sweat will try to wear special pads or garments, try multiple antiperspirants and/or topical medication to try to ‘stem the tide.
Now there is a safe, reliable and well-tolerated means of reducing sweat production that is quickly and easily administered that lasts for several months: Botox Cosmetic injection. Botox Cosmetic is not just for smoothing out wrinkles. It is now FDA-approved for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. The Spa at Aestique is currently treating patients with excessive underarm sweating with Botox Cosmetic. The treatment itself only takes 15 – 20 minutes and on average it lasts about six months.
Many of our patients come in for treatment on a regular basis, usually about twice a year, so that this frustrating problem is almost completely eliminated from their lives. Others come in prior to important social engagements, such as weddings and reunions and before important public appearances. Our patients who have undergone Botox Cosmetic for hyperhidrosis often state that the treatment is life changing.
Juvederm, Voluma and Volbella
To regain a youthful or less tired look or to lend volume and to sculpt the lips, you may want to try one of the dermal fillers. The dermal fillers we use are temporary, yet long lasting, injectable gel implants. Our Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner are both extensively trained and experienced clinicians that perform these procedures. As we age our skin loses elasticity and moisture. This normal aging process, plus environmental factors like sun exposure, cause different facial lines to form, including moderate to severe lines and folds. Some areas that may be treated with fillers are: parentheses near the mouth, vertical lip lines, lip corner lines and marionette lines.
- Juvederm ultra XC
- Juvederm ultra Plus XC
- Voluma XC
Also available to treatment is Volbella.
- It is a nonsurgical office injection procedure
- Contains modified hylaronic acid, derived from a naturally occurring sugar found in the human body
- Is gently injected by our PA/NP under the skin using a very fine needle
- A topical skin anesthetic is used prior to the injections
- It contains a common anesthetic as well called lidocaine to reduce discomfort
If you have been looking for a natural-looking filler to enhance the fullness of your lips and reduce lines around the mouth, Volbella is for you. The Spa at Aestique is excited to introduce Volbella in both our Greensburg and Shadyside spas. Volbella is the latest FDA-approved injectable added to the Juvéderm family of dermal fillers and can be used alone or in conjunction with Juvederm Ultra XC. This non-surgical lip augmentation treatment is designed to plump the lips and minimize the appearance of fine lines around the mouth, also known as perioral rhytids or perioral lines- lines that previously were difficult to treat. What makes this filler unique is its patented Vycross technology which, through more efficient crosslinking, produces greater lift capacity and longer lasting results. In fact, a company-led study found that over 90% of test patients reported natural looking lips with more than 80% of them still satisfied with their results after one year.
This temporary filler is made of Hyaluronic Acid and does not require a skin test before your injections. The smaller Hylauronic Acid particle size in Volbella allows your clinician to treat fine lines without getting a full look in these delicate areas.
Volbella is the perfect product to choose for small fine lines and subtle enhancement of the lips. The smaller particle size allows for the correction of these fine areas without the worry that your lips will get bulky or too puffy.
*Elective cosmetic procedure results vary. Outcomes are unique to each individual and providers offer no guarantees regarding results.
Aestique® is always looking for the newest proven cosmetic treatments to offer our patients. We are excited to announce that we are now offering, FDA approved Kybella treatments to help with under chin fat. This non-surgical treatment contours and improves the appearance of submental (under the chin) fullness. With this procedure, we can eliminate that double chin with nothing more than a few injections at reduced cost of its surgical counterpart.
Whether that double chin was caused by weight gain, aging or genetics, this area has proven to be resistant to diet and exercise. Kybella works by injecting the fat underneath your chin. The active ingredient, deoxycholoric acid, is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, Kybella causes the destruction of those fat cells. Those cells can no longer store or accumulate fat – they are permanently removed.
Kybella is performed in-office and typically takes 15-30 minutes. Multiple injections are performed during each session. The number of sessions can vary depending upon your individual circumstances but most often 3-6 sessions are recommended, spaced at least one month apart. Following your treatments you may notice some temporary bruising, slight swelling or redness at the injection sites which should subside within a few hours. Post treatment restrictions are similar to that of dermal fillers. You can return to normal activities immediately but you will want to avoid strenuous exercise for the next few days. Any discomfort from the injection can be alleviated with an ice pack and/or Tylenol. You will begin to see a change after only a few visits. You will notice a more taut, thinner, youthful appearance. Once you have reached your desired aesthetic outcome, re-treatment is not expected.
- Minimally invasive
- No downtime
- Reduced fat underneath the chin
- Youthful, thinner look
- No surgery
- No anesthesia
WHAT ARE NOVATHREADS?
NovaThreads are small, fully absorbable sutures made of polydioxanone (PDO), a synthetic biocampatable material long used in surgical settings. With age, our skin naturally loses elasticity which often results in a sagging and wrinkled appearance of the chin, jawline and neck area, as well as a hollow appearance in the cheeks due to loss of volume. While these concerns are best remedied with surgical intervention, NovaThreads can help to create positive results with minimal downtime.
HOW DO NOVATHREADS WORK?
NovaThreads is a minimally-invasive procedure that utilizes thread lifting to significantly minimize visible signs of aging. The threads can be placed to stimulate collagen in areas of volume loss or to fill a fold. They can also can be used to pull and tighten the skin, such as that of the neck or brows. Over the next 4-6 months, your skin absorbs the threads and they won’t leave behind scar tissue.
NovaThreads come in a variety of sizes and shapes that can be combined with other injectable by your expert injector to create a customized treatment plan. Plus, in addition to lifting and tightening, this procedure also works to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production for long-lasting facial rejuvenation. This innovative procedure is able to lift drooping brows, restore volume to the cheeks, tighten the skin on and around the neck, and reduce the appearance of marionette lines and jowls.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY APPOINTMENT?
If you are deemed a candidate for NovaThreads, your provider will apply topical anesthetic to numb the placement area. Once your skin is sufficiently numb, the NovaThreads, which come pre-packaged inside hypodermic needles, will be strategically placed under the skin according to your pre-determined treatment plan. While some patients experience mild swelling, tenderness, or redness at the placement site, most are typically able to resume their regular activities that same day.
HOW LONG WILL MY RESULTS LAST?
NovaThreads are a quick and easy way to get immediate results with long-term benefits. The PDO thread will be absorbed by your body, but that doesn’t mean your skin won’t react to it. During the 4 to 6 months needed to fully absorb the PDO suture, your skin is also repairing itself around it. That repair process is called “controlled healing”. In medical terms “selective inflammatory response” is the principle behind a lot of aesthetic procedures (such as fractional laser, chemical peels, and microneedling). Our skin is very good at repairing itself, and by inserting Novathreads we make it heal itself by creating new collagen, naturally!
NovaThreads can be used on their own as well as a great enhancement to fillers and Botox or Dysport.
BENEFITS OF NOVATHREADS?
- Minimally-invasive, non-surgical procedure.
- NovaThreads can stimulate natural collagen production in the face and neck.
- The results of a NovaThreads procedure will continue to improve even after the threads have been naturally absorbed into the body.
- This treatment can be combined with other procedures, such as injectable fillers, during the same appointment.
- No downtime required.
BENEFITS OF NOVATHREADS?
The lifting and tightening effects of your NovaThreads procedure will be immediately visible and your results will gradually improve over the following few weeks as collagen production is stimulated. Your body will naturally absorb the NovaThreads roughly six months after placement. Most patients find that their facial skin is visibly refreshed and revitalized after their procedure, but retain a natural-looking appearance.
What Do I Need To Know?
- Consultations for NovaThreads are available at both our Greensburg and Shadyside MediSpa.
- Treatment times vary depending on the size and number of treatment areas; typically NovaThreads treatments take approximately 45 – 75 minutes.
- Results are visible immediately. However, most patients see optimal results 1 week post treatment when swelling has completely subsided.
- No downtime required.
- May experience mild swelling, redness, and/or tenderness.
What is Sculptra Aesthetic and how does it work?
Sculptra is a new injectable used to fight wrinkles and sagging skin by stimulating the skin’s collagen production to help restore the cheeky plumpness of healthy skin. It is an alternative anti-aging treatment to injectable dermal fillers, skin creams, fat injections and implants. Collagen is an important structural protein found in connective tissue. Its function is to keep the skin firm, youthful and smooth. As you age, your body’s collagen production decreases, and you may begin to see wrinkles or sagging. Fat loss beneath the skin also results in drooping skin, hollowed cheeks, indentations and depressions in the face.
As Sculptra stimulates your skin to regrow its own natural collagen over time, it helps to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds resulting in a firmer, younger looking skin. It is important that you understand that Sculptra is simply a collagen stimulator. The Sculptra itself is NOT providing the filling action; the Sculptra causes a reaction in the skin, which forms new collagen. The Sculptra itself is absorbed by the tissue and is gone about 2 years after a treatment, but the new collagen layer which is left behind may last 2 or more years. Sculptra requires a SERIES of treatments to achieve adequate filling for most skin defects.
Is Sculptra safe and do the injections hurt?
Sculptra is composed of poly-L-lactic acid, a molecule which is biodegradable, so it does not harm the body and is easily broken down and absorbed. We use a very effective topical numbing agent to numb the skin prior to the injections. The Sculptra powder is also reconstituted with water and lidocaine, so you will feel more numb as the injections are being done. Most people are surprised at how comfortable the treatments are.
What is the usual treatment protocol for Sculptra?
On average, a minimum of three treatment sessions are needed over a period of several months. The number of injection sessions and the length of time between sessions vary from person to person. Older patients, thinner patients, and patients who exercise extensively may require more product or more treatment sessions.
Are there specific instructions to follow around the time of my treatment?
You should avoid taking the following medications for at least 7 days prior to your injections to minimize bruising:
- Any type of anti-inflammatory medication – including Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Aleve, etc.
- Any type of Omega-3 supplements such as fish oil, flax seed oil, etc.
- Vitamin E
You can also take Arnica to help prevent bruising. We offer arnica tablets at The Spa at Aestique. Start the pills (one tablet 3 times a day, dissolved in your mouth rather than swallowed whole) 3-7 days before your treatment and continue the pills until any bruising is gone. This will cut the healing time significantly.
We will send you home with an ice pack and recommend you ice the treatment area off and on for at least the first 24-48 hours.
Most IMPORTANT: Rule of 5’s: Massage the areas injected for 5 minutes, 5 times daily, for 5 days. This is critical to prevent the formation of nodules – we want to keep the Sculptra particles dispersed in the tissue rather than allowing too much collagen to form in one spot.
We are excited to announce we are now carrying Dysport as a second option for a neurotoxin. Don’t worry, we still have our first love, Botox, but wanted to be able to offer another option! Dysport, like Botox is an injection proven to help smooth the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines without changing the look or movement of the rest of your face. Untreated muscles still work normally, so you can continue to express feelings naturally. The lines disappear, not your expressions.
Dysport is a neuromodulator which, like Botox, is derived from the botulinum toxin. It works by temporarily paralyzing muscles. When your muscles relax, wrinkles that are formed by repeated muscular contractions are minimized.
Dysport, like Botox, is a temporary solution for wrinkles. Results last from 3-4 months, at which point you’ll need a follow-up injection to maintain your smooth look.
How long does Dysport last?
You’ve got better things to do than think about what your frown lines look like. Dysport may help improve the look of lines for up to 4 months. The majority of patients see improvement in just 2–3 days after treatment, but 2 weeks for final results.
There is one important difference between Dysport and Botox, they are dosed differently. For example 50 units of Botox does not equal 50 units of Dysport. Below is a diagram that illustrates how the dosing is different but your provider will give you their recommendation on how many units would need to be administered for desired results.
